The old version was two separate habits. You hiked the ridge in the morning, then drove somewhere else for food. The new version is a single loop that starts at a trailhead and ends at a table on Slauson, and the reason it works is that both halves finally line up on the same days.
The neighborhood's best weekend now depends on knowing which two days it's closed and which mile of Slauson has filled in.
The two-day shift that reshaped the week
The most consequential local news of the last twelve months wasn't a new opening. It was a closure. Due to Los Angeles County's budget cuts, the park became one of six regional parks closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting from June 30, 2025. That single change moved the center of gravity of the neighborhood weekend.
Kenneth Hahn is not a minor park. Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is a state park unit of California in the Baldwin Hills Mountains of Los Angeles, managed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. As one of the largest urban parks and regional open spaces in the Greater Los Angeles Area, many have called it "L.A.'s Central Park." The 401-acre park was established in 1984. When it closes two mornings a week, the ridge itself effectively runs a Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule. That's the frame every other weekend decision now fits inside.
The practical takeaway for residents is quieter than the headline. Weekday joggers who used to have the Bowl Loop to themselves at 7 a.m. now compress into a five-day window. Saturday and Sunday absorb more foot traffic. If you want a genuinely empty trail, Wednesday and Thursday mornings are the new sweet spot.
The ridge, by the numbers

Those individual trail figures come from the Burke Roche trail which is 2.2 miles, the Bowl Loop at 0.8 miles, the Ridge trail at 2.6 miles, the Waterfall Trail at one mile and the Ballfield Walking Path at one half-mile, all inside the same 401-acre park. The regional trail is the newer story. The park, which is part of the greater Ballona Creek watershed, is now connected to nearby open spaces across La Cienega Blvd. via the Park to Playa Bridge. What that means on a Saturday: you can start at Reuben Ingold Walking Park, drop into Kenneth Hahn, cross the bridge over La Cienega without touching a crosswalk, and connect through the Stocker Corridor toward Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. The overlook itself pays out the effort. The unique perspective looks north over the Los Angeles Basin that extends from Santa Monica Bay to the west, across the Hollywood Hills toward downtown Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Mountains to the east.
Slauson has become a full day, not a stop
For years, the honest answer to "where should we eat around here?" involved a drive. That's no longer the case. The Slauson Corridor between View Park and Windsor Hills now holds enough operators to build a full weekend around, and the anchor is new.

The menu features steakhouse classics as well as standouts such as fried chicken and caviar sliders, chicory and crab salad, and collard green lasagna, plus a selection of beer, wine and cocktails. The address is 4437 W. Slauson Ave, and the intent behind it matters. Intentionally located along the Slauson Corridor in Historic View Park-Windsor Hills, Somerville is an ode to the past, a toast to the present, and celebration of the progress in between. We are a progressive American dining experience that highlights contemporary cuisine while honoring the rich roots of South Central Los Angeles. Reservations are the constraint. The morning half of the corridor has quietly matured too. Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen runs weekly community programming and functions as the daytime living room. It sits in a rotation of longtime and newer places that residents actually use: Jon & Vinny's brought its East Coast Italian format to Slauson, Simply Wholesome has held down the health-focused end of the menu since long before the corridor had a name, and the same family behind Orleans & York runs Jerusalem Chicken, which is one of the few Palestinian restaurants in the city. Giti Thai handles the weeknight-quality end of Slauson. Dulan's on Crenshaw remains the reference point. Along Crenshaw Boulevard, you'll find Dulan's on Crenshaw, a long-standing soul food restaurant. "They've passed it down between generations, it's got great cornbread and biscuits."
The through-line is that Slauson can now carry breakfast, a walk, lunch, and dinner without leaving the neighborhood. That wasn't true five years ago.
A Saturday that actually uses both halves
Here's the loop the geography now supports, and the order matters:
- 7:30 a.m. Coffee and a scone at Hilltop before the trail heat starts.
- 8:15 a.m. Enter Kenneth Hahn from the La Cienega side. The Bowl Loop is 0.8 miles and passes the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial along the way.
- 9:00 a.m. Cross the Park to Playa Bridge and pick up a leg of the Stocker Corridor. Turn back at the overlook or push on for the longer Ridge Trail.
- 11:30 a.m. Simply Wholesome or Jerusalem Chicken for a working lunch on the way back to the neighborhood.
- Afternoon. Reuben Ingold Walking Park for a slower reset. Here you will find exercise enthusiasts of all ages and ability enjoying the view and getting into shape.
- 7:30 p.m. Dinner at Somerville, booked earlier in the week.
The point of writing it out this way is that every earlier version of this itinerary required a car trip to a different zip code between morning and evening. It no longer does.
The car-free version
Enough residents ask about this that it's worth spelling out. The county runs a purpose-built shuttle for exactly this loop. The Link Baldwin Hills Parklands Shuttle Bus transports park visitors from the Metro Expo La Cienega Station to Kenneth Hahn State Recreational Area and the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. The Parklands Shuttle operates 8 am to 6:00 pm Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. Rides are 25 cents one way. The shuttle is free for Seniors and children under 5. The shuttle has 3 routes with stops located at: La Cienega/Jefferson Metro bus stop adjacent to the Expo Station; Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook; and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. Shuttles run on a 20-minute route, are airconditioned and ADA accessible.
A quarter for a one-way ride between the two anchor destinations of your weekend is the kind of local detail that never surfaces on national coverage of the neighborhood. Use it. Parking at the overlook fills up by mid-morning on Saturdays anyway.
When the loop bleeds into West Adams
The Slauson Corridor is one direction. The other is northeast, into West Adams, where residents already run half their errands. The current shortlist worth knowing:
- Adams Wine Shop, founded by sommelier Ruben Morancy, is a specialty boutique focusing on wine produced by women and BIPOC, wherever they may be in the world.
- Hya, an LA-exclusive specialty goods store curated as an energetic and inviting space.
- Sole Folks, a sneaker boutique co-op with a stated mission behind the merchandising.
None of these are five minutes from the ridge, but they're closer than Culver City and they're the reason many View Park residents skip the mall entirely. Slauson Avenue is home to locally owned boutiques and dining spots like Jon & Vinny's, an LA staple for Italian food, and Simply Wholesome, known for its smoothies. The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall has grocery and clothing stores, but many people prefer to shop at Westfield Culver City, a few miles west. Add West Adams to that list of alternatives.
What this changes for a longtime resident
Not much, if the weekend already worked. A lot, if it didn't. The neighborhood has spent the last few years quietly assembling the ingredients of a genuinely local Saturday: a trail network that finally connects, a corridor that finally holds a real reservation, and a shuttle that already runs the exact route between them. The one adjustment worth internalizing is the two-day closure. Everything else is upside.
